Last Friday night, I spent 4 hours providing testimony to the panel assigned the question, “Did CJ Mahaney wrongly influence the process of Brent Detwiler’s dismissal from his church in Mooresville, NC?” I strongly protested this narrow question which addressed a secondary issue. As a result, the SGM Board reversed themselves at the last minute and allowed the panel to hear all my concerns. I didn’t find out about this change until after I arrived.
As a result, I was not fully prepared to address the issues this latitude afforded. Nevertheless, the interaction that followed was profitable. I also provided the panelists documentation and counsel in written form before and after my hearing. During the hearing they asked my opinion on topics like C.J.’s fitness for ministry, how SGM should proceed from here, and how evaluations of leaders can be done better in the future.
Each panel has been asked to report back to SGM Board who will then determine CJ.’s future with SGM.
“These panels will then issue their findings and recommendations to the board, who in turn will publish them online and make a final determination on C.J.’s future in ministry with SGM.” (Dave Harvey, October 28, 2011)
“Each of the committees will prepare a report that will contain recommendations for the SGM board. We will publish the unedited reports after the board has reviewed them and written its own response to them. Since the committees have until December 13 to produce the reports, the board will likely wait until January to release them.” (Dave Harvey, November 28, 2011)
There is a lot more I could say but I think it best to wait until the reports are published and the SGM Board makes “a final determination” regarding C.J.
Until then…Merry Christmas!
