C.J. Mahaney Issues Statement Protesting His Innocence

The statement below is contrary to ALL the evidence in my opinion and in my possession.

A STATEMENT FROM C.J. MAHANEY

For nearly two years now, I have remained silent about a civil lawsuit brought against various parties including myself. During that time, many have urged me to respond publicly and address the accusations against me. These pleas have only intensified over the last week in light of reports of testimony in a recent trial. I look forward to the day when I can speak freely. For now, the simple and extraordinarily unsatisfying reality—for myself and others—is that in the face of an ongoing civil lawsuit, I simply cannot speak publicly to the specifics of these events. Even with those constraints, however, let me be clear about this: I have never conspired to protect a child predator, and I also deny all the claims made against me in the civil suit.

I am deeply grieved for those who suffered abuse while part of Covenant Life Church, as well as those beyond the church who were abused—and I continue to pray for justice to be served on their behalf and for God’s healing grace in their lives. I’m saddened, too, by the confusion and damage that has resulted from public comments and speculation about these events. Still, my trust remains in the Lord, who comforts the brokenhearted and promises in his justice and in his time to right every wrong.

In the grace of the gospel,

C.J. Mahaney

Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville

May 22, 2014

This statement is just like John Loftness’ statement to Solid Rock Church in Riverdale, Maryland on May 13, 2013 regarding the allegations of fact that he was a sexual sadist.  Loftness was Chairman of the Board for SGM from March 2012 to February 2013.

“My attorneys continue to advise me not to discuss this suit with others nor to make any statements to news media about the allegations brought against me and others. I have followed their advice and intend to continue to follow it through the duration of this suit. This, of course, is a challenge to you, as it is to me, but it is wise counsel.

“I do think it necessary that I tell you something in general terms, and I ask that you keep this in mind as this suit is played out in the public arena: I have never physically or sexually abused a child—at any time, in any place, and in any way. Nor have I ever sought to shield someone I knew to be a pedophile from legal consequences for his actions.”

No one should be surprised by this categorical denial of wrong doing by Mahaney. He has no choice but to deny on the advice of his lawyers like Loftness. What else can he do at this point? Confess?  Now that’s an idea!

Of course, the Maryland Assistant States Attorneys, the Montgomery County detectives, all the victims of sexual abuse alleging a conspiracy, and the lawyers in the civil suit are COMPLETELY wrong about Mahaney. He did ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong. I bet they are scared Mahaney will sue them and prosecute them. I'm sure they will drop their investigations and lawsuit immediately in light of C.J.'s self-declared innocence.  Laugh out loud.

And what about Grant Layman's sworn testimony under oath? Of course, C.J.'s brother-in-law was just lying through his teeth. Well, maybe not. C.J. refers to it only as "reports of testimony in a recent trial." Maybe Layman wasn't even there. Then again, I saw him there. By who knows, maybe I wasn't there.

Judge Terrence McGann, please send Mahaney and his lawyers the recording. I think they are confused.

Folks, C.J. Mahaney is in serious trouble! He has a proven track record of lying and deceiving in other matters. Read my documents from 2010 and 2011 and my blog posts from 2011 and 2012.  There is a long evidentiary history.  The simple truth is he cannot be trusted.  That is not a slanderous remark.

Mahaney says, “I have never conspired to protect a child predator.”  That’s a softball for law enforcement.  All they have to do is find out if Mahaney reported all those he knew to be pedophiles in CLC and SGM.  If he didn’t, he was protecting them from criminal prosecution and that proves a “conspiracy” when others failed to report in conjunction with him.

I was on the SGM Board of Directors for 25 years and worked closely with C.J.  I was the number 2 leader in SGM from 1998-2007.  I resigned in 2007 as a matter of conscience.  I have no knowledge of Mahaney ever reporting, or instructing his staff to report, suspected or known pedophiles to law enforcement.  That is my sworn testimony.  I now have knowledge he did not report known pedophiles.  That too is my sworn testimony.

This statement by Mahaney is meaningless.  It is a public relations piece.  Mark my words.  No one will be deterred from going after the truth and holding him to account.

Postscript (May 23 at 12:58 pm)

I learn every day. From what I can tell, the State of Maryland is concerned about a criminal conspiracy, not whether SGM leaders and CLC pastors were mandatory reporters at the time of abuses. That is why C.J. said, "I have never conspired to protect a child predator." There is no question, C.J. did not report multiple sex abusers, just like Grant Layman did not report multiple sex abusers; but as I understand it, that is not the issue for prosecutors.  It comes down to whether or not he “conspired” to cover up their crimes in the legal sense.
